The Chancellor has announced plans in the March 2020 budget that the government will reimburse small employers (meaning those with less than 250 employees) for statutory sick pay paid out to employees for the first 14 days of sickness. Statutory sick pay is currently paid at £94.25 per week.
The Chancellor estimates that this will cost up to £2 billion and will help up to 2 million businesses.
This is to help support small employers through the economic challenges likely to be presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Presumably it is hoped that this will provide reassurance, as well as encouraging people to avoid coming to work with potential infection.
